5 Top Tips for Ransomware Prevention

Here are 5 of our top tips to prevent a ransomware attack from happening within your organisation.

1) Keep Software Up-to-date
Ensure that all of your software is kept up-to-date. If you are using an older version of software, you may be vulnerable to a Ransomware attack – just like what happened with the Wannacry attack. Make regular software checks and install all security updates or patches.

2) Back-up your Critical Data
Ensure your data is backed up regularly, especially your critical data. It is a great advantage to also back up multiple copies both online using the cloud and offline to external devices.

3) Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Using a VPN can protect you from attacks when using a public W-Fi. The VPN will create an encrypted tunnel for all the data you send and receive that cannot be reached by hackers. Avoid using public Wi-Fi when making transactions or connect to a secure VPN to complete these transactions.

4) Ignore all Emails and Hyperlinks sent from unknown sources
Spam emails and social media messages are widely used to trick people to click on links, creating the malware on your device and ultimately infecting the network. If something doesn’t look right about the email address or the name, just hover over the link to see the actual destination of the link.

5) Use a Ransomware Recovery Protection
Eloquent Technologies offer a Ransomware recovery service where your data will be copied and backed-up using Object Lock. This allows back-up data copies to be made unchangeable for a certain period of time, preventing any cyber attackers to encrypt data – so you can restore your clean copy, to be back up and running without having to give in to the hacker and pay for your own information.

Need a bonus tip? Use the 3-2-1 rule for even greater resilience.
This method is backing-up data 3 times, using 2 different types of data, with 1 off-site.
